Who Are The Friends of Fort Constitution?

We are members of a friends group in association with the NH Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation. In 2018 a New Hampshire Benefit Corporation, Friends of Fort Constitution, LTD was established with the sole purpose of the protection and preservation of Fort Constitution in New Castle, New Hampshire. We are now a 501(c)(3) Non Profit, Friends of Fort Constitution, Inc.

This fort is the site of the first armed conflict and shots fired in the American Revolution on December 14 and 15, 1774. Previously know as Fort William and Mary it's history begins in the 1600s. The fort was part of the coastal defense network dating from the early 1800s and was the place used to store mines and nets used in Portsmouth Harbor to stop U-boats during WWII. The site is a national treasure but suffers from years of neglect. Our immediate goal is to reverse this situation and teach others the history.
